Petrified Ocean is a meditation on the way objects record (and “remember”) the past, and an invitation to the audience to imagine and empathize with experiences radically different from their own. It uses electronically augmented sounds to subvert expectations about the objects used in the piece, and as a way to hopefully guide the audience into a slightly different way of seeing the world.
I collected the stones and field recordings used in the piece on the north shore of Long Island. The piece itself is highly improvisational, and is a structured exploration of the sonic possibilities afforded by the found objects. The sounds that result have a highly textured quality to them, and are inextricably linked with the materiality of the stones themselves.
